In a fresh update from Google’s blog, the tech giant has unveiled its decision to discontinue the Jamboard whiteboarding software by 2024’s conclusion. As the sun sets on this collaborative tool, Google is ushering in a new era by guiding users towards external application platforms.
Why the Change?
Google’s shift follows insights from Workspace users voicing a fondness for external tools. Platforms like FigJam, Lucidspark, and Miro stand out, providing advanced functionalities such as:
- Infinite canvas size
- Ready-to-use templates
- Voting mechanisms
In light of this feedback, Google has has chosen to pivot from Jamboard and concentrate on improving its primary collaboration tools, specifically Docs, Sheets, and Slides
What’s Next for Jamboard Users?
- On October 1st, 2024, Jamboard will shift into a view-only state. From this date forward, restrictions will be applied for generating new Jams or modifying current ones.
- By December 31st, 2024, users are advised to safely save their Jam files. Post this date, Google will initiate the procedure to indefinitely delete these files.
For those familiar with the Jamboard meeting room display, it’s essential to note that this hardware will also see its end. Software updates will cease on September 30th, 2024, as the license subscriptions come to an end on that date. However, for those reluctant to transition immediately, there’s an option to prolong subscription up to that date.

Google advise choosing its Google Meet Series One displays, particularly the Board 65 and Desk 27. During this shift, educational entities will get assistance from Google, which encompasses reimbursements for previous Jamboard hardware and connections with applications like Figma, Lucid Software, and Miro.
